The Mount Kenya Trust fencers provide an integral service to the conservation battle that rages on. They maintain and protect the fences constructed around the mountain forests and interact and educate communities about the issues with human wildlife conflicts in their respective areas.
One of the main reasons the fences were constructed was not only to mitigate the human wildlife conflict on a daily basis but also to provide a corridor for wildlife to safely pass through from the various ecosystems such as the neighboring Ngare Ndare forest, Borana and Lewa Conservancies and onto the mountain.
The fences have helped create a balance between encroaching agricultural infrastructure and the conservancies and Mount Kenya National Park too.
The wonderful thing about these kind of projects is that the rangers do all this with passion and a smile on their faces every single day. The unsung heroes behind conservation work are the rangers behind the scenes.
